1) EFFECTS OF ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE INSTRUCTION ON FEMALE VIOLINISTS/VIOLISTS: A MIXED METHODS STUDY

INVITATION:

Participants are invited to be in a research study on the effects of Alexander technique instruction.  Involvement in this study will entail either two 30 minute lessons a week for 10 weeks or, if randomly selected to be in the control group, control group participants will receive two 30 minute lessons after the post-survey is completed. Fifty percent of the participants will receive 20 lessons and 50% will receive two lessons.  Additionally, all participants will be asked to complete two brief online questionnaires and five participants, of those who will be receiving 20 lessons, will be asked for two 30-minute interviews and 3 observations.

PARTICIPANT CRITERION:

This study will include female violinists and violists who are between the ages of 18 and 35 years old.  Violinists and violists must be currently studying either privately with a teacher or have completed their studies as music majors. (Performance or education majors are encouraged to participate.)  

REMUNERATION:

There is no financial compensation for this study. Participants will receive 20 Alexander technique lessons at no cost. Lessons normally cost between 65 and 100 dollars for 40-minutes.
